About The Navigators

The Navigators are one of Newfoundland's most energetic and entertaining new Celtic groups made up of several of the island's well-known musicians. Since forming in November 2000, they have become one of the hardest working bands in the province and are now playing regularly in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Members of the band include: Fred Jorgensen (Tin Whistles, Bodhran and Vocals), Arthur O'Brien (Electric/Acoustic Guitars and Vocals), Ian Chipman (Bass and Vocals) and Paul Murphy (Drums). With original songs, accapella, instrumental numbers, ballads andshanties the band has created their own sound that is suitable for a variety of shows from rock concerts to soft-seat auditoriums, from folk festivals to conferences or from pubs to parties. The band is always guaranteed to both give and have a good time.

Their popular debut CD, Dance and Sing, helped the band win the 2002 MIANL Award for Roots/Traditional Group of the Year. In 2002/2003, The Navigators made several television and radio appearances including ASN's Breakfast Television, CTV's Canada AM and CBC's Pay If Forward II, Benefit for Badger. Over the first two and a half years, the band played hundreds of concerts and shows including: The George Street Festival, AHL Classic All-Star Game, Molson's Snow Jam 2003, 2003 Nokia Briar and The Nova Scotia Kitchen Party.

The band can be seen regularly at many popular bars and clubs in St. John's, Halifax, Grand Falls, Corner Brook and Clarenville.

Band Members:

Arthur O'Brien: From Bay Bulls, Arthur is one of the band's lead vocalists and plays acoustic and electric guitar. He is a strong baritone and has sang for audiences as far away as Germany and the southern United States, but is most well known in Newfoundland and the Maritimes. As a performer on the local St. John's scene he has been a member of Connemara and released a solo CD in 1997. In January 2000, he recorded with Cape Breton producer Gordie Sampson and the Nova Scotia-based Celtic group, Cuillin.

Fred Jorgensen: From the Burin Peninsula town of Bull's Cove, Fred is another lead vocalist of the group and a veteran player of the tin whistle and bodhran. A strong vocalist with amazing range and an unmistakable voice, his performances have been described as entertaining, energetic, and dynamic. As a founding member of the well-known Newfoundland folk group Fine Crowd, he recorded two popular albums (Poverty's Arse and Sucker For Good Company) and gained the MIANL Song of the Year in 1996 with Hugh Scott's "Theresa Maria". Fred has also lent his talent to many other recording projects and groups over the years.
